Let’s Observe National Influenza Vaccination Week

December 7-13 is National Influenza Vaccination Week

If you have not already gotten your flu shot, we urge you to get it this week. We have heard that many of the clinics and drug stores have run out of the vaccine, but we still carry it at our Urgent Care Center in Danbury. If you are experiencing  flu like symptoms and you are unsure as to whether it is the flu or a cold, watch this Medical Minute Is it The Flu or a Cold  or come in and get diagnosed and treated.

You may have heard recently that many cases of this year’s flu strain is the H3N2 strain, or Influenza A. Our own Dr. Brown was interviewed by the Stamford Advocate last week about whether this changes the protocol for protecting against and treating the flu. He had this to say

“Someone who gets this year’s flu shot might come down with the flu, but, hopefully, it will be a less severe flu”.

He added in a later statement “Also I think the immunity from the vaccine lasts all season (and even longer) but that later in the flu season different strains that may be more resistant begin to emerge.”

The CDC says this about this years flu predictions:

“Early data suggests that the current 2014-2015 flu season could be severe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges immediate vaccination for anyone still unvaccinated this season and recommends prompt treatment with antiviral drugs for people at high risk of complications who develop flu.  So far this year, seasonal influenza A H3N2 viruses have been most common. There often are more severe flu illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths during seasons when these viruses predominate.”

We carry ant-viral medications, and are here for you 7 days a week, no appointment necessary. If you have questions about the flu shot feel free to call and speak with one of our providers at 203 826 2140.
